Ingot

Original Xbox games on your Mac.
Native on Apple silicon, rendered with Metal.

Free and open source · macOS 14 or later · Apple silicon (M1 or newer)

Built for Metal

Metal is Apple's own graphics technology, the way Mac apps talk to the graphics chip. Ingot draws every game with it directly, at up to 4× the Xbox's original resolution.

Native on Apple silicon

The Xbox ran on an Intel processor, but your Mac's M-series chip is built on ARM, a different design that speaks a different language. Ingot translates each game into ARM code as it plays.

No BIOS needed

Ingot recreates the Xbox's built-in system software itself, so there's no BIOS or other console files to hunt down. Just bring your game.

Get started

  1. Download Ingot and drag it to your Applications folder.
  2. Open it. The app isn't notarized yet, so macOS will block it the first time. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway (on macOS 14 you can also right-click Ingot and choose Open).
  3. Add your games. Point Ingot to the folder with your ISO or XISO files, something like ~/Documents/xbox. Use Add Game Folder… in the library or in Settings.
  4. Play. Double-click a game in the library.

Ingot doesn't include any games or copyrighted Xbox software. Use images dumped from discs you own.

A huge thank you to rfandango

Ingot exists because of rfandango and his emulator, hakuX, which plays original Xbox games on Android phones. He did the hard part: recreating the Xbox's processor, its system software and its graphics chip well enough that games run fast and look right. Without hakuX I would never have attempted any of this. Everything Ingot does stands on top of his work.

And a big thank you to the xemu team too. hakuX grew out of xemu, the original Xbox emulator for Windows, macOS and Linux, and Ingot's sound still comes from xemu's recreation of the Xbox's audio chip. Years of their research into how the Xbox works are in here.

Why it has a different name

I thought this was going to be as easy as forking hakuX (making my own copy of its code) and slapping a Metal backend on it. Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky. Getting games to run well on a Mac meant changing a lot more than that:

With that much changed, it isn't fair to call it hakuX, or to send its bugs his way. hakuX's author doesn't support Ingot, so please report Ingot problems on Ingot's GitHub, not to hakuX. And if you enjoy Ingot, go give hakuX and xemu a star.
